Repairs and Renovations

Two years ago we were forced into recognizing the fact that our Church buildings were badly in need of repair and that the problems could not be put off any longer. In the Church, we needed a new floor, a new heating system and all the windows need replacing. The Church hall is not in good condition either, also needing repairs to the floor, new windows and repairs to the roof.

We decided that the repairs to the Church building were the most pressing and that we would have to start there. We applied to the Irish Government, who very kindly supplied some funding for our project. This allowed us to budget for the floor repairs and the heating system (Phase 1).

We employed a firm of builders who started work in August 2002. They removed all the pews and tore out the old wooden floor. The plan was to put in a new concrete floor so we decided it would be a good idea to put in an under-floor heating system.

Tenders were invited for the heating system and we decided to install an Air system. The air burner was installed in a little out-house behind the church and the ducts were installed before the concrete was poured for the floor.

After the floor was finished, all the pews had to be re-installed. We put up new panelling around the walls, behind the pulpit and also re-paneled the Minister’s room.

The gallery had not been used for some time because the stairs were unsafe. We had some money left from the Government funding so we decided to use it to fit a new staircase.

So that was Phase 1 completed. Volunteers from the congregation got together and painted the entire inside of the building and generally cleaned everything.

Phase 2 will be to fit new windows. As you can see, they are in very bad condition and are leaking water when it rains etc. Unfortunately we have run very low on funds. An appeal was made to the congregation who are donating money and running various things to raise funds. We estimate that the windows will cost approximately €18,000 (£12000 stg) to renew.

Phase 3 will be to start repairs on the Church Hall but we really don’t know when we will be able to do this. Estimates for the repairs to the hall run at about €50,000 but we haven’t even got any builders to look at it for us yet as we don’t envisage having the funds for this for many years.

At the minute we are trying to raise the money to enable us to fit the new windows.

Appeal Fund

We have launched an Appeal fund to enable us to continue with the repairs. If you feel you would like to contribute to this fund, we would be very grateful and you will always remain in the hearts and prayers of the congregation of Crossroads Presbyterian Church.
